MIAMI (CBSMiami) --Zoo Miami was flooded with super heroes as the Live Like Bella 5k Run/Walk took center stage among the animals.

The event - which was inspired by the life of  the late Bella Rodriguez-Torres - aims to raise money in order to fight pediatric cancer.

"We believe that the real super heroes are the children battling cancer. Whether they're angels who have gone to heaven or they're currently in the battle or they're survivors, we feel they're super heroes. So that's where the idea came to have a super hero themed walk," said Bella's Father Raymond Rodriguez-Torres.

Many participants created teams to honor a child who has passed away or to show support for someone in a battle of their own.

"It's a great way to bring the kid together for a day of fun after having treatment in the hospital for so long," said participant Sarah Perez.

This was the first 5k put on by the foundation and around 15-hundred supporters signed up to run, walk, and check out the animals.

"We're very humbled and so happy with the turn out. It just shows that Miami is a community for Bella's memory and for all these children that are battling... dedicated to find a cure for pediatric cancer," said Rodriguez-Torres.

Bella's mother, Shannah Rodriguez-Torres, had a word for those who encountered Bella.

"If you met Bella, you would know that in the six years she was battling cancer, she did it with a smile and she fought to the end," she said. "I think people when they met her - what they saw in her eyes - they saw that fight and they saw that spirit. They were motivated to live like Bella."
