FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - An arrest has been made after a Deerfield Beach woman claimed she was sexually battered in her home.

Broward Sheriff's deputies in Deerfield Beach were sent to check on reports of an assault of an elderly woman in the Highlands Garden rental apartments around 2:30 a.m.

Neighbor Eric Maly said when he heard an alarm sound and went to help the woman he thought was having a medical issue.

Instead he said he found 22-year old Clyde Leandre in the apartment of a 93-year old woman.

"He was on his knees trying to pull her off the bed, but he had no pants on," said Maly.

Investigators believe Leandre followed someone into on the apartment buildings and then got into the woman's apartment when she went to take out the trash.

"Initially some of the other residents in the building attempted to subdue the subject. However, they basically explained that he seemed to have the strength of ten men and was oblivious to them being in the room," said Det. Ian Kuechler.

When deputies moved in to take Leandre into custody, he lashed out, according to the sheriff's office.

"There was a little bit of banging around and when I finally looked out the door, there were two deputies in the hallway," said Daniel McGill.

After a struggle in which two deputies were injured, Leandre was finally taken into custody.

The woman was taken to Broward North where she received medical care for various minor injuries. McGill said it's a shame anything had to happen to her.

"I've been here almost six years and I've known her the whole time," said McGill. "She's a real peach, she doesn't see too well but she's a real sweetheart."

Leandre was taken to Broward North where he is receiving medical attention. He faces charges for burglary, sexual battery, resisting arrest with violence and false imprisonment.

The sheriff's office said Leandre has an extensive criminal history in Broward County going back to 2010.
