Two Convicted For Involvement In Tax Refund Fraud Scheme

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Two men, after a 10-day trial, have been convicted for their involvement in a tax refund fraud scheme that resulted in cashing thousands of dollars in tax refund checks.
Marlan L. Copeland of Miramar and Brannoc K. Rudd of Miami Gardens were convicted by a federal jury. They were convicted for their involvement in a tax refund fraud scheme that resulted in the cashing of over $100,000 in tax refund checks.
Copeland and Rudd brought over twenty checks into a Wachovia bank in Miami Gardens, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Each check reflected a tax refund issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The defendents at the bank cashed the checks and left with the money.
All though each check had been allegedly signed by the taxpayer, at the trial the taxpayers identified that the signatures were forgeries.
Copeland faces a maximum of 12-years in prison. Rudd faces a maximum of five years in prison.
The sentencing is set for April 20th before U.S. District Judge Joan A. Lenard.
