FLORIDA CITY (CBSMiami) – Florida City police said they are investigating a robbery where two thieves held up a Denny's restaurant at gunpoint.

The manager of the Denny's was not authorized to speak on camera, but he did tell CBS4's MaryAnn Martinez that several businesses in this part of Florida city off US-1 have been robbed recently.

One near-by hotel confirmed with CBS4 it has been victim of a robbery in recent days.

On January 5th, surveillance footage from inside the Denny's at 401 SE 1st Ave. showed two armed robbers enter the restaurant at around 2:40 a.m.

Both were wearing hoodies and masks to conceal their faces. While their method of concealment was not unusual, the duo did have purple gloves on.

Police said one robber grabbed an employee at gunpoint and directed her to open the cash register.

The second thief proceeded to the rear of the restaurant where he pointed his firearm at an employee and demanded his wallet, investigators said.

After taking the employee's belongings, the second thief made his way back to the front where police said he demanded the wallets of two patrons.

"This is our favorite place. We come here all the time," said customer Evelyn Combs. "We never seen anything like that happen here."

On the way out of the restaurant, one of the robbers dropped the money from the registers. Witnesses told police the thief's firearm discharged, but no one was hurt.

"To know that this place got robbed and something like that, it makes you worry," said customer Borris Marshall. "I don't really want to eat here no more. Now, I'm afraid for my life."

When the two robbers finally exited the Denny's, they reportedly jumped into an older model Blue Hyundai Accent with an unknown amount of money.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers (305)471-TIPS (8477).
