MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Police believe speed was a factor in a head-on collision on the Tamiami Trail Wednesday which killed three people and critically injured one.

There were a total of four people involved in the two-car accident, which happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The accident, between a Jeep and a four-door Lexus, happened about 12 miles west of Krome Avenue on the trail.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Lexus, with two people inside, was heading west on the Tamiami Trail and veered off, crashing head-on with a Jeep carrying two people as well.

The two people inside the Jeep, a British and German tourist, were both killed. FHP is reaching out to both Embassies regarding the accident.

FHP Trooper Joe Sanchez said the Lexus was driven by a Seminole Indian tribe member who died. The passenger, also a Seminole tribe member, was airlifted to Kendall Regional Hospital and is in critical condition.
