MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Miami Police have arrested a teen in connection with the shooting of a three-year-old girl in Liberty City Sunday.

Authorities confirmed the arrest Tuesday. The 16-year-old suspect is expected in court Wednesday for a hearing.

The suspect has been charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder, one count of shooting into an occupied building, and one count of use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Since the shooting, the three-year-old has been released from the hospital.

Alquidiven Daniels' step-daughter, Ayanna, was caught in the gun fire Sunday afternoon, around 2:30 p.m., in Liberty City.

Someone randomly squeezed off several rounds in the courtyard of his apartment complex in the 1200 block of Northwest 62nd street.

"We were just trying to run for cover and then we see all this blood everywhere," said Daniels on Sunday.

Once inside of their apartment, Ayanna's panicked mother, Kiera Wright, noticed her daughter was hit.

"I pick my daughter up, I see a big hole in her leg, her bone sticking out, I busted out crying someone call 911," said Wright.

That's when Daniels grabbed his gun and fired back. A tearful Daniels said, "If y'all got the right to bear arms man protect your family man, protect your family man."

Police and hostage negotiators rushed to the scene and put the neighborhood on lock down.

Investigators said officers had to dodge five minutes of gunfire before they were able to escort emergency responders into the crime scene to rescue the little girl.

"Some officers were being fired upon arriving to the scene," said Miami Police spokesperson Frederica Burden.

Ayanna was rushed to Jackson Memorial to undergo surgery. She is expected to be okay, but Daniels says she will need physical therapy.

Sunday night, he held on to his other child in anguish because he says the frighten situation has become a part of life for his community.

"I am hurt and people are scared around there," said Daniels.

Friends of the family say Ayanna's parents plan to move out of the apartment complex. They are currently staying at an area hotel.
