Bryan Mercado, 17, was gunned down just after 12:30 p.m. near a bus bench at NE 164 Street and NE 15th Avenue.  The shooting happened near Maverick High School where Mercado attended the morning program.

While one teen faces felony charges students who attended the school with Mercado went to class with heavy hearts on Tuesday.

Counselor and Principal Alex Madrigal were here to help them through it.

"It's senseless violence that shouldn't be occurring, and right now we just feel for his family, for our kids here at school and the entire school community. It's just difficult," said Madrigal.

Miami-Dade Police arrested Gutierrez and 19-year old Yveslander Oriscar Tuesday morning.

Oriscar walked up to Mercado, who was with friend at the bus stop, pointed at him and told Gutierrez 'Shoot him, shoot him', according to his arrest report.

Gutierrez then pulled a gun and shot Mercado several times, according to witnesses.

"It seems like he was shot point-blank," said William McCoy. "One of the guys just went up to him and shot him. The shots are what got my attention. This was shocking to look at him."

Seventy-two year old Louise Wallace was also at the bus stop and was shot in the leg.

"When I looked up I saw a guy holding a gun and firing and after that, everyone was scattering for their life," said Wallace.

The two suspects jumped on a jitney and witnesses saw them exchange clothes on board, according to detectives. Officer pulled it over and made the arrests.

Police said Gutierrez and Oriscar have been charged with first degree murder and aggravated battery.

Gutierrez remains in the juvenile system. Oriscar is locked up in adult jail without bond.

Meantime, students are going about their day, knowing Mercado's life was cut short at just 17-years old.

"It's senseless violence that shouldn't be occurring and right now we just feel for his family, for our kids here at school and the entire school community. It's just difficult," said Madrigal.

At dismissal on Monday, students who knew Mercado said they were grieving for his family.

"His mom think that he in school right now, getting out of school and this happened to him," said Jonathan Joseph. " Just lost another student, another friend."

Students said Mercado was well liked.

Neighbors who heard what had happened were deeply upset.

Carmen and Anthony Gonzalez said this shooting made them think of their 19-year-old son Ismael Patterson who was shot and killed seven months ago.

"I am a mother who lost a child 7 months ago," said Carmen Gonzalez. "And this is just too much, this loss of young lives."

"My son died 7 months ago," said Anthony Gonzalez. "And every day this is happening. Kids are killing other kids."

Police haven't said what prompted the shooting.
