MIAMI (CBSMiami) – With turkey, stuffing and family on many travelers minds, not making it to their destination wasn't what many travelers thought they would get before Thanksgiving.

A wintery storm in the Northeast has caused travel troubles for travelers

"Very nervous, anxious, scared," said Tina Fry.

That's because this mother and wife is not sure whether she will make it home in time to spend Thanksgiving with her family

"Now we are flying into DC into a snow storm hopefully we will make it to Pittsburgh for the holiday," said another traveler.

Fry, her friend and their kids decided to visit sunny South Florida for a few days but now that it's time to go, they may be forced to stay a little longer.

CBS4's Marybel Rodriguez asked, "You spoke with your family. What did they say?"
"They said it's already snowing. There is three inches on the ground and they expect six more. They are concerned with us flying," said traveler Debbie Dillan.

On one of the busiest travel days of the year, Mother Nature is making travel in parts of the country even more difficult because of the "Noreaster" that is expected to dump several inches of snow from Washington, D.C. to Boston.

'It's a double whammy. The holiday travel and now the weather, hopefully everyone makes it out of there," said traveler Nicole Cruz.

Cruz was one of the lucky ones who managed to get out of New York before the snow storm hit and arrived at MIA just in time.

"How do you feel to be back home in Miami," asked Rodriguez.

"Excited, cannot wait to be with my family," replied Cruz.

Others however may have to wait a little longer.

At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, several flights have already been canceled and more than 100 delayed.

As for Fry and company, they will be thankful once they have made it home safely.

They said all they are hoping for, "is that we make it home safe and are not stuck in the snow storm."

More than 900,000 travelers are expected to pass through MIA over their nine day holiday travel period. More than 46 million people are expected to travel this holiday weekend.

But the weather isn't the only factor impacting Thanksgiving travel, apparently, so are gas prices. according to AAA across the country. They are the lowest they've been in five years, meaning more people are hitting the road this Thanksgiving. AAA said its the most since 2007!

The Florida Department of Transportation is helping travelers get to their destination safely with electronic warning signs and their 511 traffic guide system. They also have more than 350 cameras in place to help them monitor any and everything on the road that may impact traffic flow from accidents to a mattress in the the road.
