MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Police are searching for the person who fatally shot a mother of two outside her Miami home Saturday night.

Around 8:30 p.m., Scelida Hernandez says she heard her friend and landlord was outside their home on the 100 block of SW 52 Place, chasing her dog back into the property.

Hernandez says she heard two gun shots and rushed outside to see her friend, Arelys Gomez, bleeding. She pleaded with neighbors to call police.

"The police were talking to her, telling her not to fall asleep," said Hernandez. "She kept saying, 'My children! My children! My wallet! My wallet!'"

Hernandez says the wallet was later found abandoned in the neighborhood. Gomez leaves behind a 9-year-old daughter and a son in his 20s.

Hernandez says she can't imagine anyone would target Gomez, since she was a woman of humble means.

"It was a death she didn't deserve because she a very kind person," said Hernandez. "She served everyone."

Police is asking anyone who might have seen anything to come forward by calling Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
