WESTON (CBSMiami) – A group of cyclists is mourning the loss of one of its members Sunday after he landed beneath a truck's wheels.

The Broward Sheriff's Office reported a collision with a few of the bicyclists resulted in Miguel Aviles, 47, of Miami landing in front of the passing truck.

The collision took place around 8:30 Sunday morning near Mile Marker 31 on U.S. 27.

The group of 300 cyclists was riding northbound in the fast lane as accompanying vehicles waved traffic to pass them on the slow lane.

Witnesses reported a chain-reaction collision amongst the cyclists, which caused one of them to fall into the slow lane just as a semi was going by.

The man fell in front of the two rear tires.

Initially, officials said the driver, Eddie Da Costa, of the Swift Transport of Arizona semi was unaware of the accident.

Another driver flagged down the truck driver and the driver remained on scene to assist investigators.
