MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) -- Authorities are investigating a woman who Miami-Dade school officials said threatened to harm her kids in Miami Gardens on Wednesday.

Officials said Dalicia Barnes went to a Department of Children and Families office and threatened to go to Myrtle Grove Elementary located at 3215 NW 176th Street and harm herself and her children.

Once she left they office, the people called police who confronted her at the school where her three children, ages 6,8, and 9 attend.

Officers said she informed them she had a gun in the car which is when they searched her car with her permission and found a gun inside the glove compartment.

The gun was not loaded but the news was still unsettling for residents who live nearby.

"By the time I got out here, there had to be at least fifteen or twenty cop cars out here.... Maybe someone got shot or injured or threats were made. I didn't know. Nowadays bombs you never know or maybe even another Ebola scare," said resident Nicholas Debellis.

"It's kind of shocking you know because a lot of things have been happening around schools you know and people got a gun in their car and she already said something like that, that's real dangerous you know. She could've come to the car and got her gun and did something you know," said resident Jerry Downs.

School officials said the woman has been arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds. She was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center for a health evaluation.
