One of the children inside the apartment was 7-year old Taryn St. Germine. She told CBS4's Marybel Rodriguez everyone was sleeping but she was awake looking at her school project she was not happy with when she decided to destroy it.

"I was still awake. Everybody was sleeping. I took my project put it on the candle and it went high."

"Why did you do that," asked Rodriguez

"Because I didn't like it" said St. Germine.

When Coral Springs firefighters arrived everyone was out safely but the family dog had to be rescued.

"I woke up when I heard the fire alarm and instantly I ran to get all the kids out of the house" said Elijah Blacksear the father of three.

Coral Springs Fire officials have not confirmed if the fire was started by the 7-year old girl however they did say it was started by a candle.

The American Red Cross is assisting a total of 10 people which includes two families that lived in the burned out apartment and one family downstairs whose apartment suffered water damage.

They will be providing them with a place to stay and baby items for the next couple of days.
