Election Day Running Smooth Across The State

TALLHASSEE (CBSMiami) -- Florida elections officials say everything is running smoothly for Election Day.
Secretary of State Ken Detzner told reporters that 2014 elections might be a record because all 6,222-precincts in Florida opened on time with no issues.
Detzner said that more voters are learning from previous experiences such as the long voter lines back in 2012 and have chosen to vote absentee or early.
This past spring, lawmakers also made it easier for voters to vote by increasing the number of precincts and creating longer voting times.
"That convenience of having enough locations for them to go to vote, having enough equipment, the basic fundamental administration of an election, I think we are seeing at this point in time a very successful operation,'' Detzner said.
U.S. Department of Justice poll observers were present Tuesday in Duval, Orange, Hillsborough and Lee counties. Detzner said Florida is one of 17 states where federal observers are watching the voting process.
The state's election's chief said he expects to see a record turn out after everything is tabulated Tuesday night.
Continuing a trend, about 3-million voters cast ballots in Florida before Election Day, with 1.7 million people voting by absentee ballot and another 1.3 million using early voting.
Detzner said results will most likely come in fairly quickly after the last polls close in the Panhandle, which is in the Central time zone.
He added that anyone still in line to vote at that time will be given the opportunity to cast their ballots.
