MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A cold snap set new record low temperature Sunday morning in Miami.
The thermometer at Miami International Airport tumbled to 52 degrees breaking the date’s previous record of 54 degrees set in 1993.
What South Florida considers a “normal” or average low for this time of year is 70 degrees, this morning the area woke up to a twenty degree dip from the norm.
Some communities across interior sections of western Broward and Miami-Dade counties dropped into the 40’s.
In West Palm Beach, the temperature dipped to 49 degrees, below the previous record of 51 degrees in 1993.
The low temperature in Key West fell to 61 degrees, breaking the previous record of 62 degrees set in 1957.
Temperatures only reached a high of 71 degrees in Miami, breaking a record set at 73 degrees in 1949. In West Palm Beach, temperatures peaked at 69 degrees, breaking the 1964 record of 72. It only reached 71 degrees in Naples, breaking the 1962 record of 75 degrees.
Sunday night, winds will gradually shift, becoming NNE. This wind shift will bring that relatively warmer ocean air mass back across the coastal sections of South Florida.
Low temperatures along the coast will be in the mid-60’s, while interior sections will be a touch cooler with overnight lows in the lower 60’s.
If warmer weather is what you’re looking for, it’s in the forecast by midweek, with highs back into the 80’s and overnight lows in the upper 60’s and lower 70’s.
