SUN CITY CENTER (CBSMiami/AP) — Rick Scott is spending millions of his own money to try and keep his seat as Governor of the state of Florida.

Campaign finance reports filed late Friday show Scott and his wife donated $12.8 million to the Republican Party of Florida in the past month.

Scott is a multi-millionaire and he spent more than $70 million of his own money to get elected in 2010.

Scott said Friday that he was forced to put in his own money to counteract a "smear campaign" he said was being waged by a group linked to a billionaire environmentalist.

The race for governor has been expensive with more than $100 million spent on television ads alone.

The money to pay for those ads has come from a wide array of interests, including utilities and gambling companies.
