MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Miami Dolphins safety Louis Delmas was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 8 of the 2014 NFL season, it was announced today by the National Football League.

Delmas had two tackles, a fumble recovery, a pass defensed and an interception, which he returned 81 yards for Miami's opening score, in the Dolphins 27-13 victory against their in-state AFC rivals Jacksonville Jaguars on October 26. The 81-yard interception, the eighth-longest in franchise history, of Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles was his first interception of the season and seventh of his career. The touchdown was the second of Delmas' six-year career, the first occurred on December 20, 2009 as a member of the Detroit Lions when he picked off a Kurt Warner pass and returned it 101 yards for a score. Delmas also became the first Miami player to record an interception and a fumble recovery in the same game since Reshad Jones recorded an interception and two fumble recoveries vs. Buffalo on December 23, 2012.

The honor marks the first AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Delmas, who signed as a free agent with the Dolphins on March 10, 2014. Delmas was also honored in 2009 as the NFC Rookie of the Month for September.

Since the award was established in 1984, this is the eighth time and second consecutive season a Dolphins safety has earned the AFC's weekly defensive honor. Previous Dolphins winners at safety include Michael Thomas (2013, Week 15), Lance Schulters (2005, Week 3), Brock Marion (Delmas 2001, Week 13), Brian Walker (2000, Week 11), Shawn Wooden (1997, Week 1), Louis Oliver (1992, Week 5 and 1989, Week 5) and Glenn Blackwood (1985, Week 15). Delmas joins Thomas (2013), Schulters (2005) and Oliver (1989) as Dolphins safeties who won the honor in their first season with the team.

Delmas becomes the second Dolphins player to be named AFC Defensive Player of the Week this season, as he joined defensive end Cameron Wake. Wake was honored for his performance in the 33-20 victory against the New England Patriots in Week 1.
