Tropical Storm Gonzalo Gaining Strength While Traveling West

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Tropical Storm Gonzalo is gaining strength as it travels west towards Puerto Rico.

The center of the storm is located about 125 miles east of Guadeloupe and 160 miles east southeast of Antigua as of the 5 p.m. advisory.

Gonzalo currently has maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and is moving west at 12 miles per hour. This general motion is expected to continue through Monday, followed by a turn toward the west-northwest on Monday night.

A hurricane watch and tropical storm warning has been issued for Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The government of Antigua and Barbuda has issued a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning for the British Virgin Islands.

Gonzalo is expected to move through the central Leeward Islands by early Monday morning and approach Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands Monday night and Tuesday morning.
