17-Year-Old In Hospital After Hit And Run In Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A hit and run accident on Wednesday night in Miami has sent a 17-year-old to the hospital.

Two pedestrians and two bicyclists were heading west on a northwest 103rd street sidewalk when the driver of a SUV hopped the curb and hit one of the teenagers on their bike.

The victim, Juan Fernandez, was propelled off of the bicycle and against a fence before landing on the ground.

"I just heard a big crash and saw the car scraping part of it's bumper there on the sidewalk and it just picked up speed and went that way," said witness Emmanuel Polo.  "And then 1 of the kids got in the middle of the street and started crying."

The driver of the SUV fled the scene heading westbound.

Investigators tell CBS4 that the 17-year-old victim was taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he remains in serious condition.

Police believe it was a blue SUV, possibly a Hyundai Santa Fe, that now has front end damage on the right side, possibly to the headlight.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
