PEMBROKE PINES (CBSMiami) – The suspect in a fatal shooting at a Pembroke Pines gas station has been arrested.  Police say Steven Charles Dawson, 28, turned himself in to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail after Saturday night’s media broadcast of the incident.

CBS4 spoke with the victim’s mother and other family members, who’d gathered at the victim’s apartment to mourn their loss.  “I miss my son so much,” said Pamela Baker.  “He don’t know what he took away from me. He took a part of me.”  Baker is heartbroken over losing her son and also anguished about her four-year-old granddaughter having to grow up without her father.

Darrel Joshua Baker was gunned down at the car wash where he worked, next to a Chevron gas station near University and Taft.  Pembroke Pines Police say Steven Charles Dawson was the shooter.  According to police, the incident was domestic-related.  “The suspect pulled out a firearm and began to chase the suspect through the parking lot,” said Pembroke Pines Police Department Capt. Al Xiques.

“That baby was running. He ran and was trying to hide,” said Barbara Gillis, Baker’s aunt.  “He still kept shooting and shooting. He meant to kill him. I have no sympathy for him.”

Witnesses at the car wash said after the shooting, Dawson took off.  Those who live in the alleged gunman’s neighborhood say they saw a number of police officers at his home.  “There were four cop cars parked out here. Two of them were out of their car. One of them was down. He had an assault rifle on him,” said neighbor Christian Moore.

The victim’s family say they’re relieved that their loved one’s alleged killer is behind bars and their healing process has barely begun.   “It’s going to be hard for me to forgive him. I will forgive him but it’s going to be hard,” said Pamela Baker.
