Women To Watch: Trend Tracker® Tara Gilani With Sandra Bernhard

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – She's often described as a one-of-a-kind, in-your-face, multi-faceted comic. It's Sandra Bernhard and CBS4 Trend Tracker® Tara Gilani recently caught up with this Woman to Watch at Jazziz Nightlife in Boca Raton.

Bernhard is in South Florida for her "Sandyland" one-woman comedy tour where Tara witnessed first-hand Bernhard in rare form, both on stage and off.

Bernhard told Tara it's all about performing live.

"I think now more than ever, if someone performs live, if they are a really vital artist, and they connect with people, if they're real and they're out in the world and not just hiding behind social media," exclaimed the comedienne, movie actress, TV star, singer, performance artist and author.

She has quite the resume. It's no surprise. She's been mesmerizing audiences since the 70s with her outrageous button pushing sarcasm, wit, and satire. Few female performers are as unafraid, as unapologetic or as hilarious.

"Too many people weighing in on other people they don't even know and everyone jumps on the bandwagon, it's tiresome," she explained.

Sandra Bernhard has stayed current without overstaying her welcome. She has moved in and out seamlessly between films, TV and stage for three decades.

"I just think it's important to be, especially as a woman, to be incredibly strong, fierce, present, a warrior and take time also to recreate your work and revitalize yourself and you can't always be out there, in the eye of the storm, getting all the attention, I think it wears people out," said Bernhard.

"Sandra is super stylish, in an understated yet curated way," quipped Gilani, paying mock homage to Sandra's favorite word: "curated."

Sandra shot back. "Well look at me, the way I'm dressed right now."

"You're dressed perfectly and it looks casual, like you threw it on but no, you thought about it," Gilani told Bernhard.

She replied humorously, "Well I mean it's hot as hell. I did not think about this honey, believe me."

Before coming to Boca Raton to perform, Bernhard, a gay icon, thrilled crowds in Provincetown, where her sass and snark is adored.

When asked about her trip there, she replied, "Fabulous," but wouldn't compare it to Boca.

"Boca could kick it up a few notches. I was out there working my ass off tonight and tired and on edge but I didn't want to ride them too much. You know, they're a little fragile in Boca. The bones are a little fragile," snarked Sandra.

Sandra admitted she sometimes performs in places where they just don't get her humor but in the end, she simply loves to perform.

Fame is not the name of this girl's game

"Just to be famous just to be successful, well you can't ask Robin Williams any more but I can assure you he would have told you maybe it wasn't everything it it's cracked up to be," said Bernhard.

Tara asked her if love is the answer.

"I think love is always the answer," Bernhard replied.
