More Parents Taking Advantage Of Florida's Main Voucher Program

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) - More and more parents across the state are taking advantage of Florida's main voucher program.

Step Up for Students, the largest organization involved in Florida's tax credit scholarship program, reported this week that nearly 68,000 students had enrolled for the current school year.

The program offers private school vouchers to low-income families.

Last year there were slightly less than 60,000 students enrolled.

The enrollment jump comes when the program is being challenged legally. One lawsuit seeks to block an expansion of the program signed into law this year by Gov. Rick Scott.

A second lawsuit filed last month contends the existing program violates the state's constitution by creating a parallel education system and by directing tax money to religious institutions. Most schools that take the vouchers are religious.
