New Dolphin Calf Gets New Name At Miami Seaquarium

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A dolphin at the Miami Seaquarium has a new name, Bali.

Rioux gave birth to the dolphin calf August 2nd.  The Seaquarium held a naming contest in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 'Flipper' TV series, which was filmed at the Miami Seaquarium.

It's quite the family affair in the Top Deck pool.

Rioux's mother is Panama and Panama currently has another baby dolphin, a 5-month old female calf, named Calypso.

That means Panama has her 2 daughters and her one granddaughter in the Top Deck pool. The 5-month old calf, Calypso, is the aunt of the unnamed baby calf.

The name was announced on September 19th the official anniversary of when the 'Flipper' TV series first aired.

The name was chosen by Juan Carlos Rodriguez, the winner of the "Flip It Forward" contest.  When asked why he chose Bali, he said because in North Bali you see plenty of beautiful dolphins.

The lucky winner was randomly selected and also received a VIP experience for four people at the park, including admission, animal encounters, lunch and souvenirs.
