Wynwood Businesses Going Dark

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The artsy hot spot of Wynwood just North of Downtown Miami is so popular. It's growing so fast and quickly the power grid can't keep up!

No power and no lights equal no fun.

The customers kept positive but for the businesses everything was at a halt. They couldn't even run credit cards.

"I was just happy to still have this awesome food coming," said customer Chris Morris.

At Pride and Joy BBQ, they said it's a constant problem. The owners said it needs to be fixed.

"Unfortunately, it's hurting our business," said Pride and Joy Co-Owner Luis Decasas. "It's hurting it a lot…big time

"This happened three times in one month…we closed down early and we lost a lot of income," said Pride and Joy co-owner Carlos Barillas.

They said they've lost about $12,000 worth of income.

Nearby Jimmy'z restaurant said they've experienced it too.

David Shapiro was on a test run to be the manager at Jimmy'z when suddenly there was no power.

"I said to Jimmy, 'Are you testing me?' I was trying out for a management position. He said, 'This happens, this happens, this happens.'"

He got the job and said they are dealing with it the best way they can.

Across the street at Su Viche they are having similar issues.

"One or two times, we just had the lights go up and down," said Sebastian Stahl of Su Viche.

CBS4's Cynthia Demos spoke with Florida Power & Light.

"We've been working with the businesses in the Wynwood district," said FPL spokesperson Bill Orlove.

The area is growing so fast and adding huge pieces of equipment that it's hard to keep up.

"Either the customer or contractor needs to contact us so we can provide the reliable service from us," said Orlove.

Meantime, restaurant owners have a different reaction to this request.

"That's ridiculous we're paying for a service," said Barillas. "We're not overloading. We've been here two years, nothing different but we have the same problems."

FPL said they have put in a new transformer and they think the problem should be fixed.

Businesses said they hope the power isn't blown in the area anymore. They said Art Basel is around the corner and it's such a crucial time for the businesses and they want to make sure they are filled with pride and joy for their neighborhood.
