Arrest Made In Deadly Ft. Lauderdale Hit & Run

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - A driver sought in a deadly hit and run accident on North Federal Highway has turned himself in to police.

Marvin Permenter, 31, has been charged with one count of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death.

The accident happened Monday, September 8th, around 9:45 p.m.

Investigators said a Permenter, driving a rented Chevrolet Cruze, was heading south on Federal Highway in the center lane. When he went to change to the left lane in the 5900 block he struck a man who was trying to cross the road.

The man was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police are still trying to identify him.

After the accident, Permenter reportedly drove off without stopping, calling police or trying to render aid to the fatally injured man.  The car was later found abandoned in a nearby residential neighborhood.

During questioning Permenter admitted to hitting the man, according to a police report. He said after the crash he panicked but later wanted to turn himself in.
