Summer Stats: A Little Too Wet, But No Record-Breaking Heat
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The summer is beginning to wind down and the transition into fall will happen in a few weeks for most of the nation.
However, South Florida is still feeling the summertime warmth and new numbers out Thursday show it was a close to average season for the area.
Temperatures were only slightly above average for parts of South Florida during the summer.
However, meteorologists with the National Weather Service said rainfall totals varied widely due to a lack of large-scale weather makers.
In general, rainfall totals were about five inches above normal with isolated locations seeing 10 to 15 inches above normal.
Miami International Airport was 13 inches above normal with the second wettest summer on record.
A few areas experienced below normal rainfall in Southern Miami-Dade County, coastal portions of Broward County and just each of Lake Okeechobee in Palm Beach County.
These areas saw rainfall totals about 3 to 5 inches below normal.
The National Weather Service station in Miami received the most rainfall at 44.34 inches, followed by MIA with 38.98 inches.
Canal Point in northwestern Palm Beach County recorded the least rainfall with 18.63 inches.
Summer temperatures were about one degree above normal.
Miami International Airport saw an average summer temperature at 83.5 degrees with temperatures .7 degrees below a 30-year normal, but the summer ranked as the 14th warmest on record.
The Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport saw an average summer temperature of 84.1 degrees and was .1 degree above the 30-year normal ranking as the 5th warmest on record.
The dry season typically begins around October 17, but predictions show the area could see an above-normal precipitation pattern through November.
Temperatures are expected to be slightly warmer through September.
