Off-Duty Correctional Officer In Hospital After Being Shot

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) - The night after a Miami-Dade Correctional officer was shot in front of his home, police are asking everyone to be on the lookout for a car that may have been involved with the crime.

Investigators say the car that dropped an armed robber off near the intersection of SW 181st Terrace and SW 108th Avenue Friday evening may be a silver or dark gray Ford Taurus with damage to the driver's side.

Juan Guellmes, a 28-year Corrections Department veteran was washing his car outside his home.

"I heard some gunshots, I actually didn't think they were gunshots because it was daylight out," said a neighbor who asked that his name not be used because the shooter hasn't been caught.

About 7 o'clock, he said that he saw Guellmes lying outside his front door and the officer's son in a panic.

"I panicked a little bit; I didn't know if the robber might still be around since he had a gun and everything so I screamed out to the son, 'Who did this to him?' He said, 'Somebody shot him, took his chain,' so then I ran over and I saw the guy laying there and bleeding out.  He had some napkins on him and I told the son bring me towels and we helped apply pressure," the neighbor said.

"Luckily, the guy he was still conscious he was talking to me, I was asking what happened, he just told me, like I said, somebody came up to him took his chain robbed him and shot him several times."

Police said there was a struggle after the robber stole the chain and Guellmes was shot in the stomach and shoulder.

The neighbor who helped Guellmes said police and rescue crews arrived within a few minutes, but he's thankful he knew what to do to help.

"I'm a paramedic student right now so that's what I'm training to be so and I don't know I just applied pressure the guy's bleeding out so you want to help him however you can," said the neighbor.

"Just sad that things like that happened to him," said Quinton Gumbs.

Guellmes is well liked around his Southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood.

"Nice humble guy, I think he's maybe been here maybe a year or less and introduced himself," said Gumbs.  "Welcoming guy, his family's nice his son, I mean, I couldn't see anything like this happen to a guy like him."

Neighbors hope he recovers quickly, and that police catch the shooter.

The description of the subject was listed on a press release as a man wearing a black baseball hat, a black hoodie, black baggy pants and the man was allegedly armed with a black firearm.
