South Florida School Helps Babies Swim Safely

MIAMI (CBSMiami) --  A South Florida swim school is helping parents keeps their babies safe in the water.

Kick is a four letter word that if taught correctly could save your child's life.

At Little Swimmers Swim School their goal is to do just that.

Gerald Little and his friend and co-owner Meric Tendrich have been teaching swimming for more than 20 years.

As firefighters they have made it their priority to raise awareness about the importance of learning how to swim.

"Unfortunately we have seen the other side of drownings we don't want something to happen that can be prevented" said Little.

It is never too early to begin said Little. The younger the child can begin taking swimming lessons the better it is.

"Our main goal is if a child falls in, to turn around, and swim back to the wall by themselves as early as six months" said Little.

Getting Little into the water for the first time with a stranger is not easy, but Little says all of their instructors are highly qualified.

On any given day Monday through Friday, at their four locations, you can see more than six instructors with a child teaching life saving techniques to little ones on a one on one basis.

"For me, it is so important my daughter knows how to swim, especially living in South Florida" said one mother who is taking her 15-month old daughter to swimming lessons. Her 15-month old can already swim back to the wall on her own and although she may cry throughout the entire session the end result is priceless.
