Officials: SunRail Averages 100,000 Riders In First 2 Weeks
ORLANDO (CBSMiami/AP) — More than 100, 000 riders have used central Florida's new commuter train within its first two weeks, according to officials of the service.
SunRail spokesman Steve Olson announced Friday that officials estimate the train has had 117,740 passengers board in the 11 days it has run between May 1 and May 15. It does not run on the weekends.
Service on the first 32-mile phase of $1.2 billion commuter train was offered free for two weeks to help users get acclimated to the train and its schedule. A handful of tweaks have been made over that time to lessen some midday delays and parking issues. Paying service is set to begin Monday.
The project is aimed at easing traffic on Interstate 4 and securing the area's long-term economic health.
