Davie Police Investigating Murder At Apartment Complex

DAVIE (CBSMiami) - Police dusted for prints and searched for clues for hours after gunfire errputed just after one in the morning at the Palms Apartments at Hiatus and S.R. 84 in Davie.

Marta Lopez lives nearby, she heard a bang, but had no idea that it was the sound of her neighbor Brian Creighton being murdered. Investigators say the killer knocked on the door. "Obviously he went to the door, you open the door and greeted by something he didn't like," said Davie Police Captain Dale Engle. "It appears he tried to shut that door and was shot through the door. "

Police took away the entire door to study it for evidence, along with several bags. A family friend said another friend was inside the apartment with Creighton when it happened. He said he heard someone knock and say, "Pizza." When that friend heard gunfire he hid and called 911. Neighbors are stunned "It's kind of disturbing really," said Peter Friss. "I've lived here since 2010, about, I come down from Minnesota and it's been pretty quiet since I've been down. It's a little unsettling."

Friends tell us Creighton was a party planner and promotor, a hard worker and was just starting a clothing line. He was well known as a great athlete. "He was a good athlete he was a outstanding senior athlete at Miami SPrings high school his senior year in high school," said Bob Rowden. "(He was) a very good soccer player, a kicker on the football team, a tennis player, just a good kid."

As frightening as it sounds, someone knocking on the door in the middle of the night and opening fire, investigators believe the killer was looking specifically for Creighton. "My opinion is this is not a random act," said Engle. "The person at the door knew the victim and was there for a purpose."

Davie police are looking at surveillance video from the apartment complex. They're also asking for information from the public. If you can help call Broward Crimestoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
