MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho received an honorary degree in public service from Florida International University during their spring commencement ceremonies on Sunday.

“Superintendent Carvalho’s leadership, vision, determination and hard work are at the heart of the transformation we have seen in our public schools,” said FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg in a statement. “We’re proud of our relationship with Superintendent Carvalho and M-DCPS, with whom we’ve joined forces to provide a quality education to students in Miami-Dade County and to create a college-going culture at our public schools.”

Carvalho was recently named Superintendent of the Year by the School Superintendents Association.

Approximately 4,000 students received their degrees during eight commencement ceremonies at the FIU Arena on the university’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus.
