Captain Finds Body Floating Near Haulover Inlet

MIAMI (CBSMiami) --Police say the body of a man found floating near Bal Harbor on Sunday appears to have been in the water for some time.

The body was found about two and a half miles out to sea near Haulover Inlet around 1:30 p.m.

A man who identified himself as "Captain Chad" told CBS4 he is the one who found it.

"I came across something we thought to be floating debris," said Chad. "Didn't turn out to be floating debris. (It) turned out to be something a little bit more gruesome."

Captain Chad was on this boat, called "The Outcast" with some fishing clients.

"Deep-sea fishing for big fish…you never know what you're going to find out there," said Chad.

He said he saw the body of a black man floating in the water and called 911 immediately.

"I turned the boat the opposite way, just trying to keep their eyes off of whatever I found just so that it wouldn't raise any alarms," said Chad "Everything played out smoothly and no one was upset."

After the body was retrieved from the water, authorities took it to the Haulover Marina where the medical examiner's office took the body away to look for clues about how the man died.

The man has not been identified. The lead agency investigating this case, Miami-Dade Police Department, said the man is not a resident of the Florida.
