One Man Hurt In Police-Involved Shooting In Miami

ALLAPATTAH (CBSMiami) - One man had to be rushed into surgery Tuesday afternoon after a Miami Police officer said he was forced to open fire on the man wielding a machete, police said.

The shooting happened just outside a park along NW 18th Ave. and NW 28 St. Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses said children were playing in the park when the shots were fired.

According to a police spokeswoman, a veteran officer with MPD responded to the scene of two men fighting.

When he arrived, he observed one man "sharpening a machete on the sidewalk".

He told the man to drop his weapon, but he did not, so the officer felt he needed to fire, the Spokeswoman Frederica Burden said.

Witnesses say the man was shot in his torso and leg.

A woman who identified herself as the man's mother ran frantically to the scene screaming and crying for more information about her son's condition.

Police said the man was taken into surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital and he is expected to recover.

The other man involved in the fight was checked out by paramedics but was not taken to the hospital.
