Car Split In Two In 79th Street Causeway Crash

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A driver was able to walk away with only minor injuries after a horrific accident on the 79th Street Causeway which split his car in two.

It happened early Sunday morning on the causeway just east of Pelican Harbor near North Bay Village. A Nissan Sentra was heading east on the causeway when it collided with a Mitsubishi Starion, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.

Both drivers lost control and hit a tree in the median. The Starion's engine compartment remained in the median, but the other half landed in the westbound lanes. The man and woman in the Sentra were airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center. Police believe there was a third person in the Sentra but were unable to locate them.

The driver of the Starion, who suffered a bloody lip and couple of scratches, remained on the scene to talk with the police.
