Delta Jet Loses Wing Panel On Flight To Atlanta

ORLANDO (CBSMiami/AP) — A scare in the air after a Delta jet lost part of its wing on a flight from Orlando to Atlanta.

The Federal Aviation Administration said after the pilot declared an emergency, Flight 2412 landed safely about 7:10 p.m. Sunday at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The airplane, a Boeing 757, stopped on the runway and was towed to the gate.

After the flight landed, Delta officials told the FAA that a four-foot by eight-foot panel from one of the airplane's wings was missing leaving gears and wires exposed.

A passenger on the plane described hearing a loud boom and then noticed the plane's wing exposed.

The FAA is investigating.
