Ex-Partner Of Fla. Ponzi Schemer To Plead Guilty

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) — The former law partner of convicted Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein is scheduled to plead guilty next month to charges he violated federal campaign contribution laws.

The attorney for 52-year-old Russell Adler confirmed that Adler will enter a guilty plea at a hearing set for April 4 in Fort Lauderdale federal court.

Prosecutors say Adler helped orchestrate thousands of dollars in bundled contributions from the Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler law firm's employees and attorneys to John McCain's 2008 campaign for president and Charlie Crist's run in 2010 for the U.S. Senate. Authorities say the contributions were illegally reimbursed by the law firm.

Adler faces a maximum five-year prison sentence. Rothstein is serving 50 years behind bars for a $1.2 billion scam involving investments in legal settlements that were phony.
