Miami Man Sentenced For Building Illegal Docks

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — A Miami man has been ordered to pay $225,000 in fines and payments for building illegal docks and piers on navigable waterways.

U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore imposed the sentence on 70-year-old Richard Bunnell of Miami who had previously pleaded guilty to violating the federal Rivers and Harbors Act by building six illegal structures on Miami-area waterways.

Bunnell must pay a $175,000 criminal fine plus a $50,000 payment to the South Florida National Parks Trust for management, restoration and research efforts. He was also sentenced to six months of home detention with electronic monitoring.

A plea agreement also requires Bunnell to modify the structures so they comply with federal law and pay for any environmental damage.
