Cyclist Dies Two Months Following Hit & Run

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - The 53-year-old cyclist who was struck by a driver who allegedly drove away and tried to dispose of his body in a wooded area has died just over two months after the incident.

Over the weekend, Craig Camlin took a turn for the worse and died from an infection.  It's a heartbreaking loss for his family.

"He died in my arms," said Craig's sister Chrissie Militello. "I promised him, I said, 'I brought you down here 40 years ago , and I'm not ever going to let you go home alone!'" she cried.

In December, Craig was hit by a car while riding his bike to work in Fort Lauderdale.  His body flew onto the truck of the car that hit him and was driven like that for two miles.  Then, severely injured, his body was tossed behind these bushes next to a dumpster.

Alex Inostroza is accused in the case.  Investigators say he admitted he was drinking before the crash.

While Craig's family does not want to concentrate on Inostroza – his sister Chrissie said Craig had forgiven him while he was praying.

"I said, 'what do you think about the  man who hit you?'  He said, 'Oh, it's ok, I've already forgiven him.'  I said 'I knew you did.  I knew you did and so have I.'"

But even in his weakened state before he died, Craig wanted to make sure other learned from this. "Don't drink and drive," he mouthed.

According to his family, Camlin needed care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and he did not have insurance. His family, on February 7, asked for the public's help as the medical bills piled up.

Craig's sister said one of her brother's last requests was to go to the beach.  He never made it.  But it is where she will come to remember him and to think about the last conversation they had shortly before he died.

"He said, 'No matter what happens, always know I love you very much,'" Chrissie recalled with tears rolling down her face. "He was a superman in every way.  He's going to be my superman forever," she said.

The family will spend the next few days planning a memorial service for Craig.  They're going to have a beachside service and plan to dump  his ashes at sea.

Fort Lauderdale police say Inostroza will likely be facing more serious charges.
