Fire Damages Portable Classroom At Hialeah Elementary

HIALEAH (CBSMiami) – An overnight fire at a Hialeah elementary school has been deemed suspicious by a state Fire Marshal investigator.

When Hialeah Fire Rescue arrived at Meadowlane Elementary, at 4280 W 8th Avenue, just after 11 p.m. they found flames shooting from a portable classroom in the middle of the campus. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the one unit and had it out within minutes.

Miami-Dade Schools spokesman John Schuster said the portable unit was being used for storage.

"It's all pretty much exterior damage," said Detective Michael Olon with the state Fire Marshal division. "It was a wood frame portable which was damaged. There is a little bit of water damage on the inside however the exterior is where the majority of the damage is and the determination that the exterior is most probably where the fire began."

Schuster said the fire would not interrupt any of Tuesday's classes. He added that the portable unit damaged by fire was slated for demolition anyway.
