Dock Collapses During Memorial Service In Bay Harbor Islands

BAY HARBOR ISLANDS (CBSMiami) -- A dock collapsed at a Bay Harbor Islands apartment building on Saturday afternoon.

According to Miami-Dade Fire, it all happened at Granada Condos located at 9341 E Bay Harbor Drive.

About 40 people were on the dock , holding a memorial service for a friend who died of cancer. They were placing flowers into the water when suddenly the dock collapsed sending about twenty of the people into the water.

"It was fast. We went face first into the water," said Mike Carney.   "I was treading water, I wasn't hitting the bottom," he added.

Police said the water was about 5 feet deep.  Three people had minor injuries. One was taken to the hospital.

"I'm a little sore myself," said Carney, explaining: "A railing fell on me but I could swim fine it was okay.  I didn't feel like I was going to die or anything."

"Based on the amount of people and the way the dock did go into the water, we're very fortunate nobody was significantly injured," said Chief Sean Hemingway with the Bay Harbor Islands Police.

Police say they'll work with Bay Harbor Islands' building department to investigate the incident. They say the dock looks old but does appear to have some recent repairs.

Police said they are working with the management of the condo building.  "Management's been fully cooperative. They're going to provide us the name of anyone who's done any work," said Hemingway.
