FIU Basketball Sets New School Record For Ineptitude

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Florida International University fans have seen some pretty wretched performances in the past year, mainly on the football field.

But the men's basketball team set a new record for futility during a Thursday night loss to Old Dominion.

ODU beat FIU 52-36 Thursday. The 36 points were the fewest points in a game in the history of the men's basketball program. The previous low was 38 scored against Georgetown in 2008 and Middle Tennessee State in 2011.

The stats from the game were not pretty.

FIU shot 31 percent from the field (13-42) from the field and that included three of 17 (17.6 percent) from behind the three-point line. The Panthers were also woeful from the foul line, hitting just seven of 14 shots in the game.

As bad as it was, it could have been much worse if not for FIU's forward Tymell Murphy. The senior scored 20 points in the game. Taking Murphy out of the equation, FIU's players were 5-29 (17.2 percent) from the field and 1-14 (7.1 percent) from three point range and were just 5-11 from the free throw line.

Yes, it was really that bad.

FIU's next game is scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m. against the East Carolina Panthers.
