Gabrielle Union's New Role

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Being actress Gabrielle Union is a very good thing. The Miami resident is sporting a huge rock on her ring finger and is staring in a new original drama on the BET Network titled "Being Mary Jane."

The title was a hit summer movie that has been made into a series. It stars Miami's adopted daughter Gabrielle Union as a TV reporter trying to have it all.

"Having it all is 'the precious,'" Union explained. "And we're all on this quest to have it all and the reality is it doesn't exist. A perfect life does not exist. I kind of shoot for its good enough."

But as of December 21st, it seems that Union can have it all.

Gabrielle and longtime beau, Miami Heat Star Dwyane Wade, announced their engagement and sent out a pic of her diamond rock.

"When I decided to return to television D and I had a sit down and have a conversation about what was going to work best for our family,' said Union. "So I made the decision I wouldn't do a show that was west of Chicago."

Luckily, Union's show tapes in Atlanta and stars many of her friends such as Lisa Vidal, who plays her boss.

"They're so ambitious and they each have their drive and they fight but they have each other's back and they understand where they want to go at the end of the day," said Vidal.

Both women say the story lines will be ripped from the lives of real women and capture relationships that are loving and supportive of other black women.

"The characters are so layered and we deal with such real-life issues for men and women alike and just relationships and family and dysfunction and the world, the century we're in," Vidal said.

"Put on your seat belts, it's going to be a wild ride!" added Union.

Like her character, Union's life has had plenty of complications, including the revelation that her fiancé fathered a baby while they were broken up.

"Being Mary Jane" premiers on B-E-T, January 7th at 10pm.
