Assailant Shot While Trying To Rob Vietnam Veteran

MIAMI(CBSMiami) -- It was a robbery gone wrong when an assailant trying to rob a disabled war veteran in Liberty City Saturday was shot in the process.

According to City of Miami Police, at approximately 12:30 p.m.,  two men approached the disabled Vietnam War veteran at gunpoint in front of 919 Northwest 47th Terrace.

"He was sitting on his porch and they were coming through there and they grabbed his chain from around his neck," said next door neighbor Catherine Loud.

At some point, Loud said she thought one of the robbers may have tried to shoot her neighbor.

"He had the gun and he started to shoot him but then the gun went off and shot his friend in the face," she said.  Then she said the other robber took off running.

Police are only saying that the shooting is still under investigation.

"The details of the robbery are still under investigation however we know during this robbery one of the suspects was shot," said Officer Rene Pimentel, Miami Police spokesman.

That injured man  was later transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

With one robber shot and  the other on the run, Catherine said her neighbor, the disabled veteran went up to the injured robber, took back his stolen chain and called police.

The victim was not injured.
