Taste Of The Town's HuaHua's Taqueria Packs Plenty Of Flavor

MIAMI (CBS4) - Serving a menu of traditional, south of the border favorites as well as some eclectic tacos, Huahua's Taqueria has become "the place" for locals to get a fast and tasty bite from this innovative taco shop.

But, it's the name that leaves people wondering. What exactly does HuaHua's mean?

"We took the "CHI" off of Chihuahua, as we have a lovely little mascot named Jalapeño, and came up with Huahua's," said head chef Todd Erickson.

Erickson is the chef and partner of this popular spot on the west side of Lincoln road on South Beach as well as Haven Gastro Lounge just down the street.

The cool and relaxed taqueria is a cozy joint with Mexican piñatas and custom made hot sauces filling the space. The spot also has an outside patio which is dog friendly.

"The concept is a fun beach taqueria, it's laidback and casual," said Erickson. "Come as you are."

In addition to the great fresh food, they serve beer, wine and home-made margaritas. Everything on the menu is well under 10 bucks.

"We're keeping it real on Lincoln Road for sure. We wanted to be the fast casual option and we want to see people here more than once a week," said Erickson.

He then brought out three featured tacos from the menu: Barbeque short ribs, fried chicken and carnitas, which is shredded pork.

The short ribs were topped with Jalapeño peppers, which makes it sweet in the meat and gives you a sharp kick with the peppers.

Next up for tasting is the fried chicken taco, served with jalapeño cornbread, cabbage and ancho ranch.

And finally, a Huahua's specialty called "Elote," it's a grilled Mexican corn, smeared with mayo, topped with cheese and spices.

"It's messy but it's really good," said CBS4's Lisa Petrillo.

For those who what something on the lighter side, a taco salad with corn crusted grouper would be the perfect choice.
