Exclusive: Former Marine Shot & Robbed Outside Home Speaks Out

MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) - A retired marine, shot in front of his own home for a gold chain, spoke exclusively with CBS4's Jamie Guirola, expressing how the thieves not only robbed him of his gold chain, but also of his sense of security.

CBS4's Jamie Guirola sat down exclusively with 64-year-old Robert Outler, a retired marine living in South Florida.

Robert spoke about his injuries and the moment when he almost lost his life two weeks ago early Tuesday morning in Miami Gardens.

"Just getting in, got out of the car. Opened the gate, turned around, closed the gate. There was a 9 mm to my head and said give it up mother f^@#%, it's a robbery. It startled me I said what, he said give it up mother f#%#% this is a robbery," explained Outler.

The former marine was then mugged and shot—right in his own front yard.

"When he grabbed me I don't know why I just hit his hand and startled him. He ran one way and I ran the other way. He shot as he was running and shot me in the back and it came through the front."

Robert took a bullet through and through.  He spent days in the hospital before returning home, but he is far from feeling better.

"Right now it's aching like hell," said Outler.

Outler told Guirola, "From my elbow up it hurts like hell, I think last night when I was sleeping I might have rolled on it, and woke up this morning hurting like hell."

The thugs stripped Outler of his sense of security at his own home.  While recovering from his injuries he's had plenty of time to think about the men responsible.

Robert said, "I'd like to have a little conversation with them.

"What would you say," Guirola asked.

Robert is thankful to be alive, but he told Guirola he cannot forgive the people who hurt him.  The case remains open as police have yet to make an arrest.
