Shooting, Barricaded Person Temporarily Closes Turnpike

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -  The Florida Turnpike Extension between SW 8th Street and Bird Road was closed to traffic for most of Sunday as police investigated reports of a shooting.

The incident happened at an apartment complex at 11755 SW 18th Street.

Police asked all residents of the complex to stay inside their homes until they could be safely evacuated.

Home video showed Miami Dade's Special Response team responding to the man who barricaded himself inside  a Southwest Miami-Dade apartment.

"We were just having breakfast at the beginning. We were there and we heard this loud boom bang about two shots first," said Michelle Miret, a witness.

The video taken by three ladies holed up in their bathroom- taking shelter and unable to leave while officers sorted out a violent domestic dispute that started around 10:45 Sunday morning.

"We were just very scared. We ran to the bathroom. We just went to protect ourselves and be safe because we didn't know what was going on," said Miret.

Miami-Dade Police says an unidentified man shot his wife who was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries and when officers arrived, the suspect tried shooting them, sparking the hours long standoff.

The family of the woman shot has been at Kendall Regional Hospital most of Sunday night . After being shot, she managed to escape with her son during a domestic dispute.

The situation ended with the suspect dead. It's unclear if he killed himself or was shot and killed by police.
