Young Girl Reports Being Followed In Key Largo

KEY LARGO (CBSMiami) – Police say a 13-year-old girl, in Key Largo, did the right thing when she managed to get away from a male stranger trying to follow her—and then alerted authorities of the incident.

The 13-year-old told Deputy Ian Barnett of Monroe County that she was walking southbound in the vicinity of the 106 mile marker of Highway US-1 just after 5 p.m. Thursday when she noticed the tan colored four-door sedan moving slowly northbound. The girl told police she crossed the highway and saw the car again driving slowly and stopping near her several times.

Alarmed by the stranger's behavior, she told police she ran to her house but no one was home. She said she saw the car stopped outside her house.

The girl left her house to walk to a relative's house nearby and the vehicle continued to follow her—this time more closely. The man in the car rolled down the window and told the girl several times to get in the, she said. She ran away.

The girl describes the man as a white Hispanic, balding.

Detectives are applauding the girl for being so observant, running away, and then reporting the incident to police. Anyone who has any information about this incident is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 305-853-3211 or 305-289-2351.
