Cars Help Drive Traffic To Art Basel

MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) -- Art Basel is in full swing after opening its doors to the public today at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

While the main exhibit is open, there are various exhibits sprinkled throughout  Miami with one of those at Miami's swankiest garage turned gallery for Art Basel.

The Swiss-minimal garage at 1111 Lincoln Road has been turned into a gallery for art lovers and grease monkeys alike.

The exhibition of cars as art called Piston Head: Artists Engage the Automobile will have 17 sculptures on the top floor of the garage.

The exhibit will included an entire emerald Renault compressed into an elongated cube, a rusted-out shell of a pickup reclaimed by the young artist Lucien Smith and the show's oldest work which is a one-million-euro single-seat race car.

Only one woman is in the driver's seat for this show. The New York sculptor Virginia Overton is exhibiting a 1993 Dodge Ram with a rear cargo transformed into a red bay of light.

The show is open to the public and on view  until Dec. 8, 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
