MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Dolphins defense haven’t lived up to expectations thus far in the season, but one bright spot has now been recognized as the AFC Player of the Week.
Dolphins defensive end Olivier Vernon was recognized by the league on Wednesday for his stellar performance against the New York Jets last Sunday. Vernon had 10 tackles, three sacks, three tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits in the victory over the Jets.
Vernon pulled down backup Jets quarterback Matt Sims twice in the fourth quarter and led the Dolphins defense that held Jets to just 78 net yards passing on the afternoon.
He also became just the second Dolphins player to win the Player of the Week Award in 2013, joining fellow defensive end Cameron Wake.
