One Person Dead After Explosion In Opa-Locka

OPA-LOCKA (CBSMiami) - One person is dead Thursday after a 20,000 gallon with an unknown chemical exploded at a business in Opa-Locka.

Police received a call Thursday afternoon about a chemical spill at the American Vinyl Company, a building located behind the Opa-Locka Police Department.

A 20,000 gallon tank with an unknown chemical, according to Miami-Dade Fire, over-pressurized and exploded. The explosion shot through the ceiling of the business and came back down, authorities said.

Five workers who were exposed to the chemical were decontaminated. Two of the five were transported for further treatment.

"Hazmat technicians at Miami-Dade Fire have sampling tools that will monitor air quality in the area. They've done this and have identified that no other businesses or residents in Opa-Locka are in danger at this time," said Michelle Fayed of MDFR.

HAZMAT crews are investigating the situation.
