High Tides Could Cause Flooding Headaches In Miami-Dade
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The next few months could bring localized flooding due to unusually high tide events in Miami-Dade County.
Officials are warning local residents about the chance of floods during several days before the end of the year.
NOAA's Tides and Currents data forecasted the South East Florida region will be at their highest levels on November 3-6, November 15, and December 3-6.
The high tide events could bring in water seven to 10 inches above the average high tides this year. Tidal fluctuations typically go unnoticed, but the extreme tide events like these can have major impacts on drainage systems and flood low-lying areas.
Because the region's storm water systems depend on gravity to drain excess water to the ocean, these high tides can flow back up into drainage systems along the coast and canals, flooding streets and adjacent areas. This occurred during a similar higher-than-average tide event on October 18th.
